Unless you’re a designer, you may not have an idea of how to take a theme you’ve found and make it your own… here are a few ideas for you, using the example of Inner West CrossFit, a CrossFit affiliate in Sydney, Australia.
You’ll see that some of the tweaks are pretty simple, assuming you have a grasp of HTML & CSS. Some of them, however (like adding the telephone field to the contact form) require some slightly-heavy coding knowledge… but all together, these changes took less than three hours to do.
Word to the wise: because you aren’t a designer, you may not even think of some of these kinds of things… so, be cool to your designer. Ask for ideas. Don’t stress the little stuff. Dave is a down-to-earth, really cool guy, and so it was easy to want to go the extra mile and make his site more groovin’ than he was even asking for, just because he’s a low-maintenance client. So if you want the most out of your designer, be cool, and value his/her knowledge.
